English is an integral and essential part of everyday life and we therefore seek to develop and extend its use in every possible way. In line with the National Curriculum, special emphasis is given to each of the following areas:

  • Reading
  • Speaking and listening
  • Writing
  • Handwriting
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation

All the above areas are taught through a daily English lesson.

Speaking and listening is key to the development of all English skills and takes place in many forms throughout the day. Children are encouraged to communicate orally with clarity in a variety of situations; with a partner, in a small group or in a whole class setting. Discussion is regularly encouraged so that children may have the opportunity of listening to and exploring the experience of others, as well as contributing their own opinions and ideas to others. Children are encouraged to read/ speak out loud in class, to groups of their peers, in assemblies and in whole school productions.
