Music Development Plan
At Coston Primary School, we aim to provide an enjoyable and challenging music curriculum that gives all pupils the opportunity to sing, play, create, and perform—both individually and collaboratively. Lessons are inclusive and developmentally appropriate for different age groups and the specific needs of the children, while still offering opportunities for students to stretch and challenge themselves. Our music curriculum is carefully designed to build strong foundations and develop musical skills and knowledge progressively over time. Pupils become confident in their ability to create, compose, perform, and listen with understanding.
Our music curriculum is organised into half-termly units with clear, step-by-step progression. Each unit builds on prior learning, helping children to consolidate knowledge, deepen their understanding, and expand their musical abilities. A structured approach to teaching ensures that new concepts are introduced logically and linked to previous learning experiences. Throughout the year, children regularly have opportunities to perform and reflect on the pieces they have studied. These performances—often at the end of each half term—allow pupils to showcase their learning and provide teachers with valuable insights into student progress.
